For Japanese learners

Turn what you already study into listening practice

Sonelune doesn't come with lessons. It reads the Japanese you are already working with, so your own material becomes something you can listen to again and again.

Your own material, as audio

Paste textbook dialogues, example sentences from your word list, or your own diary. Each one becomes a track in your library that you can replay any time.

Listen with synced captions

Follow the highlighted word as you listen. When you miss something, tap the word and hear that part again.

Start slow, then speed up

Generate new text at a gentle speed, and create it again at natural speed once you know it. The player can also change the playback speed.

Take it with you

In the iPhone app you can save tracks for offline listening, repeat one track, and set a sleep timer for listening in bed. These features are only in the iPhone app. Get the iPhone app

How it sounds

Japanese as you actually write it

Kanji and kana together

Paste text the way it is normally written, with kanji, hiragana and katakana mixed. The voice picks kanji readings from context.

Loanwords and English words

Katakana loanwords and English words such as PDF or deadline are read inside the Japanese sentence, as they appear in real emails and articles.

Same text, different voices

The same self-introduction in two voices. Hearing more than one speaker makes real conversations easier to follow.

FAQ

Questions about Japanese audio

Does it read kanji correctly?

Most of the time. Readings are chosen from context, but names, rare words and some numbers can come out differently from what you intended. If a word is read wrong, write it in hiragana and generate the audio again.

What level of Japanese is this for?

Any level, because you choose the text. Beginners can start with short sentences at a gentle speed; intermediate learners can paste essays, articles or work emails. The levels on the samples are only a rough guide.

Is it free?

The samples on this page are free to listen to without an account. Generating your own audio uses credits: the free plan includes a monthly allowance, and Plus or credit packs add more. See Pricing for the current details.

Can I listen offline?

On the web you can download each track as an MP3. The iPhone app can save tracks to your device and play them offline.

What text can I use?

Any text you have the right to use, such as your own notes and diary, or material you're allowed to copy for personal study. Your audio stays in your private library.
